VINYL GRAILS / COLLECTOR RESEARCH

WHAT'S YOUR VINYL WORTH?

Explore what makes original pressings valuable, how to identify the edition you own, and how to interpret verified record sales. Find the story behind the price.
01 / UNDERSTANDING VALUE

WHY ONE COPY CAN BE WORTH MORE

A famous album is not necessarily a rare pressing. These factors help distinguish collectible editions from ordinary copies.

01

EXACT PRESSING

Check the country, record label, catalog number, label design and matrix/runout markings. Different editions can have very different sale histories.

02

VINYL & SLEEVE CONDITION

Surface marks, playback quality, label wear, writing and sleeve damage all affect what a buyer may pay.

03

ORIGINAL COMPLETENESS

Posters, stickers, inserts, inner sleeves and promotional materials can materially change collector demand.

04

ACTUAL SOLD COMPARABLES

Review completed sales of the same pressing in similar condition—not just unsold asking prices or exceptional headline results.

02 / MARKET WATCH

DOCUMENTED RECORD SALES

Editorial examples · not live pricing

These recorded transactions show how prices vary. The figures below are specific sale results, not guaranteed values for another copy. Auction hammer prices may exclude buyer's premium, tax and shipping.

UK FIRST ISSUE

UK FIRST ISSUE
21 Jul 2026

Pink Floyd - The Dark Side of the Moon

Harvest SHVL 804 - solid blue triangle - A-2 / B-2

£280

VG+ vinyl, VG cover; no original inserts. Omega Auctions listed sold price; fees may apply.

How to interpret the numbers: Authenticate the exact edition and compare several sales. A single unusually high result, especially one reported as “Best Offer,” should not be treated as the normal market price.
03 / COLLECTOR METHOD

HOW TO RESEARCH A RECORD'S VALUE

1

IDENTIFY YOUR EXACT EDITION

Start with the label, catalog number, country and deadwax matrix/runout. Match these to a documented release entry.

2

GRADE THE RECORD AND COVER

Assess the vinyl and sleeve separately, note any playback issues, and list the original inserts that remain.

3

CHECK RECENT COMPLETED SALES

Use auction records, Discogs sales history when available, and eBay Product Research. Compare like with like.

4

ESTIMATE A RANGE, NOT ONE PRICE

Account for condition, completeness, market demand, seller fees and the difference between an asking price and a completed transaction.
