How to Identify the 1973 UK First Pressing
The original UK issue of Pink Floyd's The Dark Side of the Moon, released on Harvest Records (SHVL 804), is distinguished by several important characteristics.
1. Solid Blue Triangle Label
The earliest UK issue features a solid light-blue triangle on black center labels with silver lettering. Later pressings typically feature a triangle with a dark center rather than the completely filled design.
2. Matrix and Runout Identification
Look for the following machine-stamped matrix markings in the vinyl's runout area:
- Side One: SHVL 804 A-2
- Side Two: SHVL 804 B-2
Additional mother and stamper markings may vary between individual copies.
3. Record Label Details
The label perimeter includes The Gramophone Company identification, beginning near the 10 o'clock position. The labels also feature distinctive track-numbering conventions.
4. Original Gatefold Sleeve
The first issue was distributed in a gatefold sleeve. Multiple original sleeve-opening constructions have been documented, including sealed and unsealed variations.
5. Original Inner Sleeve
Authentic early copies can include a black, polythene-lined, die-cut inner sleeve with the patent numbers 1125555 and 1072844 and British manufacturing identification.
6. Posters and Stickers
Complete original packages were supplied with two fold-out posters and two stickers. Printing finishes, backing materials, and other packaging details vary.
7. Additional Variations
Some copies feature a circular title sticker on the front cover. Multiple matrix, sleeve, and insert combinations are documented for this release.
Collector's Identification Note
No single packaging characteristic should be used to authenticate a first pressing. Collectors should examine the center labels, matrix/runout information, sleeve construction, and original inserts together.
Missing inserts do not automatically mean a record is a later pressing, but completeness and condition can significantly influence its collector value.
