Iron Maiden – The Soundhouse Tapes (1979): A Historical Overview
The Soundhouse Tapes is the debut EP by Iron Maiden and one of the most historically important releases in the early development of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM). Issued independently on Rock Hard Records in November 1979, the EP documents some of the earliest professionally recorded material from the band prior to their signing with EMI.
Background and Recording
The EP was recorded in a single live studio session at Spaceward Studios, Cambridge, on 31 December 1978. Initially intended only as a demo, the recordings gained underground traction after being played at London’s Bandwagon Soundhouse, operated by DJ Neal Kay. The positive reaction led Iron Maiden to release the material officially on their own label.
Original Pressing Details
Sleeve and Packaging
-
Original 1979 copies were issued with a cardboard sleeve that opens at the top.
-
Due to printing delays, some pre-release copies were distributed without sleeves, making these unsleeved variants particularly uncommon.
-
A portion of the pressing included a small insert advertising an Iron Maiden T-shirt. This insert was not included with all copies.
Label Variations & Misprints
-
A very small number of copies were produced with the labels applied to the incorrect sides of the vinyl. These mispressed variants are known among collectors and remain scarce.
Production Quantity
Only one official pressing run was made in 1979, generally estimated at 5,000 copies. No authorized repressings were issued at the time, making all Rock Hard Records originals part of the single limited batch.
Tracks and Early Lineup
The EP includes three early Iron Maiden tracks:
-
“Prowler”
-
“Invasion”
-
“Iron Maiden”
These recordings feature the band's early lineup, including Paul Di’Anno on vocals, and represent versions that differ from the later album and single releases.
Historical Importance
The Soundhouse Tapes served as Iron Maiden’s first commercially distributed recording and played a significant role in helping the band secure management support and a major label contract. Its distribution through mail-order and live events contributed to the growing momentum of the NWOBHM scene.
Why Collectors Should Own This
Collectors prize The Soundhouse Tapes because it represents:
-
Iron Maiden’s first official release, preceding their entire studio catalog.
-
A single-press, low-quantity independent issue, making originals genuinely scarce.
-
A key artifact in the birth of NWOBHM, documenting the band before mainstream exposure.
-
Multiple rare pressing variations (unsleeved copies, T-shirt insert, label mispress) that enhance its collectability.
For serious metal collectors, this EP stands as one of the most important and historically valuable heavy metal records ever produced.
